Howard Lutnick appeared on Meet the Press to confirm for the American people that the tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China are not to bring manufacturing back to the United States, it is because of fentanyl, it is a drug related issue. He was asked about past deals, and he correctly replied referring to USMCA saying that the President has met Canada and Mexico in the middle by not placing tariffs on anything that is protected by the USMCA.
However, later in the interview he perhaps slipped up and said it will bring back manufacturing to the USA. It is possible that they are just using fentanyl as an excuse to bypass Congress and place the emergency tariffs. Late in the interview he also said that the prices of American produce will come down. He was pressed on when that would happen, but he did not directly reply. He was also asked if there would be a recession and Mr. Lutnick said that President Trump is going to be a winner and that we will see the greatest growth coming into America. At the end of the interview, Lutnick was asked who was in charge of his agency, him or Elon Musk, and Mr. Lutnick was not dismissive of Elon Musk being in charge, listen for yourself.
