President Donald Trump sat right next to NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office on Thursday and reinforced his ambitions to make both Canada and Greenland become part of the United States. The Secretary-General said the he did not want to drag NATO into a dispute about the future of Canada and Greenland but implied that Trump is right that the arctic trade routes will be more and more important in the future and that US leadership is needed to challenge Russian and Chinese advances in the region. Canadians are taking the president's words very seriously and are largely boycotting American made goods where possible, in a show of solidarity with their national identity. An ongoing trade war has added tensions between the countries with no signs of the relationship being mended any time soon.
Voters in Greenland recently voted in the center-right Democrats, who tripled their seats. Naleraq, which supports US ties, but a swift independence vote, doubled its seats. Both parties are for independence but disagree on the timeline.
