The dumbest trade war in history that President Trump has started is beginning to surface complaints from Republicans back home due to situations such as Canada boycotting American bourbon. This all started with President Trump saying that the tariffs implemented to kick off his trade war against Canada, Mexico, and China was due to the high amounts of fentanyl coming across the border, with the ingredients largely coming from China. The opposing argument is that drugs have been imported into America for decades and will only stop once Americans stop using the drugs.
Despite Trump saying that we don't need Canada, there are people in the United States, including business leaders who say that prices rising in a slowing economy are going to be disastrous for the consumer. Now JP Morgan is saying that recession is up to a 40% chance. Trump's supporters are arguing that he is working to make America great again for the long term, not worry about short term results. But, that is not what Trump campaigned on. He campaigned on reducing prices and usually got the biggest applause. Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota was quoted as saying "Look, this isn't the way I would do it...but they've got to show some success fairly quickly." Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky highlights that there are stories coming out that state that car prices are going to rise $10,000 and that he's worried about the bourbon that is sold in his district to Canada.
House Democrats tried to force a vote on the continuation of the emergency Trump declared that was occurring which enabled the tariffs in the first place. However, Republicans were able to counter this attempt which saves them from having to vote on it for now. The thought was that these tariffs are so unpopular, getting Republicans on the books as voting for them would have helped Democrats chances in the next congressional elections.
Canadians are taking Trump's comments about Canada becoming the 51st state very seriously. This is coming from a former friend, a NATO ally, the United States. Canadians are boycotting goods made in the US and are united nationally against Trump's statements.
