United States president Donald Trump is still repeating that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.  He's not paring back this desire, which he primarily bases his reasoning on Canada not spending enough money on defense and claiming that the only reason Canada is safe and free is because of United States protection.  Canada enjoys protection from its own defense forces and the NATO alliance.  Sure it doesn't spend what the United States spends, but Canada does not have a world of foes that might want to inflict harm if it was believed that harm could be inflicted.

To Canada, Trumps repetitious remarks, and threats of tariffs, are legitimately provoking a national response with Canadians all out boycotting American produced goods from produce to Netflix subscriptions.  Who would have thought Trump would unite Canadians so firmly in opposition to the United States of America while improving Canada's trading relationships with countries like China, who have also rallied against United States tariffs being placed on their goods.  Trump has said tariffs on Canada and Mexico will go into effect on the 4th of March 2025 after a pause and supposed concessions on behalf of Canada and Mexico.  These tariffs were originally stated to be 25%, but recently Trump has said the amount may change.  Perhaps reserving some room for negotiations.

With Trump it is unknown what the results of the negotiations will net Canada and Mexico.  After all, it was Trump who negotiated the current trade relationship with Canada and Mexico called the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada-Agreement) that he renamed himself from NAFTA.  Considering the fact that this is Trump we're talking about, all options are on the table, especially after he recently fired the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, seemingly appointing someone who might be willing to take orders to invade Canada and pass that along the chain of command.
